Chronic nerve pain is one of the most challenging and frustrating issues you can face because it affects so much of your everyday life and interferes with your sleep, work, and everything you do.
It comes in many forms and can be caused by multiple issues, making it difficult to pin down the problem and solution. Many people end up masking the pain with medications, which provide short-term relief but don’t solve the long-term problem.
At A+ Athlete Sports Medicine, Dr. Adam Redlich and Dr. Christina Lusk-Caceres want to help you determine the source of your pain and design an effective treatment plan. Here’s our targeted approach to give you lasting nerve pain relief.
Nerve pain, sometimes called neuropathic pain, is a catch-all term for various chronic pain conditions that affect your nerves. All pain occurs when the part of your body that has an injury sends a message to your brain along a network of nerves that extends from your spinal cord to your skin and organs. Where the pain is located depends on where the nerves are located.
Nerve pain often develops when a nerve becomes impinged (irritated or compressed) or damaged in some way. Common causes of this include a pinched nerve in your back or neck, a herniated disc, overuse injuries, arthritis, and other medical conditions.
Symptoms include pain, weakness, numbness, and a “pins and needles” sensation in the affected area, and even beyond it.
Because nerve pain can be caused by so many different conditions, the first step in treatment is an accurate diagnosis. We’ll conduct a comprehensive examination, including whatever diagnostic tests are necessary, such as an in-office ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or a nerve conduction study (NCS) to determine the exact site of nerve damage.
No two nerve pain cases are exactly the same, so once we have narrowed down the cause, we can develop a custom treatment plan specifically for you. Treatment options include a nerve block, spinal cord stimulation, physical therapy, osteopathic manipulative treatment, acupuncture, medication, massage therapy, and ultrasound-guided injections.
Ignoring nerve pain can cause your symptoms to become worse over time, so if you’ve noticed any nerve pain, an early evaluation can help reduce the risk of your condition becoming chronic.
